Long Time No Blog

It has been a while since I've blogged, even though lots has happened. Because of my housing situation, I have to move my fish tank 4 times a year. Unfortunately, the 20 gal tank I had would just be too big of a pain in the ass to move that frequently. I ended up digging up my old 5 gal hexagon tank made by tetra/marieneland and using that for a while. It turned out to be a nightmare to clean and used incandescent lights, so I ended up replacing it recently with a nice brand new 10 gal tank. I am so happy I made the replacement. This tank has a easy access hood and a florescent day light bulb. This size is somewhat convenient.... it's much better than lugging around a 20 gal.

Anyways here it is:

Hydor Heaters = Garbage

Never buy a Hydor heater. They are garbage!
Mine, after 5 of 6 months of use just suddenly stopped working for no reason. I went online and researched the problem and it turns out I got lucky. Apparently Hydor is infamous of getting 'stuck' and frying people's fish! The sensor breaks and just keeps heating the water into the mid/upper 90s!
I did a lot of reading and it sounds like Eheim Jager heaters are the best. A lot of people were raving about how great they are. I will definitely be ordering one to replace this broken piece o crap.

New 20 long and accessories

Wow, what a deal!

I feel like I hit the jackpot today! I’ve been searching for a good deal on a 20 gallon long tank for several weeks now. Aqueon makes kits that sell for much, much less than buying all the pieces individually.  The sizes go 10, 20, 29, 55. Unfortunately the 20 gal kit is tall.  They don’t make a long kit. The 20 gal tall kit is only $70 for everything: heater, filter, net, hood, light and more. I really wanted the 20 long, but I didn’t want to spend $70 on the glass tank, $40 on a heater, $40 on a filter, and $75 on hood/light. $225 for a 20 long or $70 for a 20 tall? Hmmmmm.
Anyways, I tried speaking with the local pet store and they generously offered me the 20 long with all the accessories for only $60. That’s right $60 for a full 20 gallon aquarium set up! I freaked out. They could have easily tried to extort me, but the owner was nice enough to give me a fantastic deal. I will definitely be returning there for future purchases.

Who and What?

Hi, I'm Dan and I live in Alaska.
I'm starting this blog because I would like to show the preparation, setup and growth of my fresh water aquariums. Even though I only recently caught the aquarist bug, I have become obsessed. I am highly interested not only in aquarium fauna, but flora as well. I love aquascaping, so you can expect my tanks to be both functional and decorative. I still have a lot to learn though, so I would appreciate constructive criticism.
